Cambridge & Suffolk Villages
Tour lasts 8-9 hours
Combine
the hustle-bustle of a famous city with the peaceful beauty of landscapes that inspired Constable and played host to thousands of U.S. airmen during World War II.
Cambridge, is a graceful
and spacious city, with beautiful college courtyards and meadows sloping to the river. Although dominated by the university, the
town, too, is very ancient and has its origins in Celtic and Roman settlements around the River Cam.
The magnificent King's College Chapel inspired Wordsworth and contains Rubens' 'Adoration of the Magi'. Cambridge's numerous other attractions include Trinity College, with its library, which was designed by Wren, and
St John's College, with its beautiful bridge, modelled on the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. Samuel Pepys
was one of the distinguished alumni of Magdalene, and his famous diaries are preserved in the Pepys Library.
The
Holy Sepulchre was founded by the Knights Templar in 1130, and is one of only five round churches remaining
in England. The Fitzwilliam Museum contains many Egyptian, Greek and Roman antiquities.
Long Melford in Suffolk has an impressive main street lined with many old buildings, a picturesque
'green' and a church decorated traditionally with flint and stone. Nearby Lavenham, little changed since
the 14th and 15th centuries, is surely one of the most beautiful villages in England. It features many fine timber-framed Tudor houses
and a market square with a cross that dates back to the 1500s.
